Specialist Leaders of Education - Julie McGrath

My name is Julie McGrath and I’m Assistant Headteacher at an all-age special school in Lancaster. I’m subject leader for English and ICT and responsible for CPD, NQT induction and inclusion.

Part of my role within school is to support other teachers with planning and assessment and I’ve worked closely with a higher education provider to support student teachers who are undertaking a special school placement.

I track and analyse pupil data using PIVATS, Progression Guidance and CASPA.  This information is then used to plan interventions for identified pupils and I’ve developed a tool for evaluating their impact. The visual marking code that I developed for our pupils is relevant for all learners in special and mainstream schools and helps teachers to give effective feedback.

I have worked closely with colleagues to introduce IPADs and have delivered inset training within and beyond school on using apps creatively within the curriculum. I am also leading on using Eye-Gaze technology throughout the school.  Our innovative use of ICT has been recognised and celebrated as we have been awarded the ICT Mark and the 3rd Millenium Learning Award (NAACE).
